What a first year…from early musings to many artists

Another year comes to a close, another year begins. With the arrival of 2016, we venture still further into the angsty teens of the 21st Century. Our current time, at worst, registers daily as a constant deluge of transient sensations and empty rhetoric hypermediated through countless devices, websites, channels, and feeds. At best, the historical moment seems to legitimately hold the possibility of significant societal transformation. The once rigid notions of individual and community identity reinforcing systemic inequality appear to be cracking (if not without turmoil) under the pressures of widespread protest, disruptive technologies, and shifting power dynamics.

Behind Glass Doors: Scenes from 4-Way, 2-Pack In Progress

Alternating shifts over the course of several days, the artists continue to recreate a previously vacant retail property in downtown LA’s Broadway Mall, one piece following the next. The works drift through a range of different subjects, undergoing a process of creative development, photo shoot session, placement in the freestanding exhibition, and possible inclusion as selected images in Series 11. Exchanges between physical and digital, material and image continue in preparation for the 8/22 exhibition opening

Exhibition Begins to Take Shape: A Conversation with 4-Way, 2-Pack Artists Adler & Edmark and Earl Gravy

On August 22nd, Pair Shaped will hold its first live exhibition featuring the collaborative work of Adler & Edmark (Christopher Adler & Alison Edmark) and Earl Gravy (Emma Kemp and Daniel Wroe). Following a succession of pieces showcased in Series 10 and 11, the two artist teams will be transferring their investigations of mediated representation to a vacant retail space in Downtown Los Angeles.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Artist duos Chris Adler & Alison Edmark and Emma Kemp and Daniel Wroe (a.k.a. Earl Gravy) transfer their call-and-response collaboration from web-based series (see Series 10) to floor space, operating from a vacant commercial property located in downtown Los Angeles.

Into the Fray: Our Contributors Begin Showing Work

After months of planning, plotting, kicking, screaming, guffawing, trialing, erring, celebrating, and staving off madness, Pair Shaped officially cuts the ribbon as a full-fledged arts platform. Following an initial soft launch period that began last December and featured our first series of pieces by Weston Lyon and Tony Cleasby, we have since whittled behind the scenes to finalize an inaugural publication schedule for exhibiting series created by artists from a variety of different backgrounds and disciplines.
